Why I Shoot Film…

As a film wedding photographer, I’ve had the opportunity to be part of some truly special days. Each wedding is unique, and my job is to capture it in the most genuine way I can. One way I do this is by using film in my photography. It’s something that really speaks to me, reignites my soul, and allows me to catch moments in a way that feels real, emotional, and full of life.

Film photography has a unique beauty. The colors come out richer, the images feel warmer, and there’s a depth to them that you just don’t get with digital cameras. The way film handles light is pretty amazing, giving the photos a dream like quality.

What I love most about being a film wedding photographer is how it forces me slow down and really think about each shot. With digital, you can snap away and delete what you don’t like. But with film, each shot counts, typically with only 24 or 36 on a roll. You have to really consider the light, the composition, and what you’re trying to capture. It’s a more thoughtful process and it’s rewarding in its own way.

The imperfections you get with film—like light leaks and grain—are actually part of what makes it so special. They remind us that life isn’t perfect, and that’s okay. That fits perfectly with weddings and marriage. They’re messy, beautiful, real, and full of love. That’s what I try to capture in my photos.

When couples look back on their wedding photos, I want them to feel like they’re reliving those moments all over again. Are you interested in hiring a film wedding photographer? Let me break down some myths and answer some common film wedding photography questions for you:

Why choose or add on film photography for you wedding?

Film photography brings a unique warmth and richness to your photos, capturing the essence of your special day in a way that digital can’t quite replicate. Its natural depth and dreamy quality add a timeless touch. It’s also been the proven timeless format! My parents and grandparent’s weddings were both captured using only film.

Is film photography more expensive than digital?

Film photography does involve additional costs due to the film rolls themselves and the development process. It’s about $15-$30 for a 35mm roll and about $25 to develop and scan, so about ~$50+ total for each roll. For 120 (medium format film, higher resolution) the price goes up more.

Can we have both film and digital photos for our wedding?

Absolutely! Many couples opt for a hybrid approach for film wedding photography, enjoying the best of both worlds. This way, you get the timeless beauty of film and the immediacy and versatility of digital.

How do you handle low-light situations with film?

Film has a magical way of handling light, but for those especially dim moments, I blend in professional lighting techniques and choose film stocks that perform well in low light. This ensures your photos glow with the warmth and beauty of your day, no matter the lighting. Also, film photos that were taken using an on camera flash are some of my favorite. Here are a few examples of film photos I’ve taken in low light situations:

How does film photography influence the pace of a wedding day?

One of the beauties of film photography is that it encourages a more relaxed pace, allowing for natural, candid moments to unfold. This doesn’t mean we’ll miss out on anything; rather, it means we’ll embrace the day with intentionality, creating space for genuine expressions and emotions to be captured.

How long will it take to get our film photos back?

Film takes time to develop and scan, a process that adds to its charm. Typically, you can expect your film photos along with the rest of your gallery in about 4-6 weeks after your wedding.

What happens if a film photo doesn’t turn out?

While film photography does involve a level of unpredictability, this often results in beautifully unique pictures. For any shots that are crucial, I always ensure there’s a backup plan in place by blending film and a copy of it as a digital picture, this guarantees no moment of the day is missed.

How do we choose the right film photographer for our wedding?

Look for a photographer whose style and approach resonate with you. Someone who understands the nuances of film and can articulate how it will enhance the story of your day. It’s also important to feel a personal connection, ensuring they’ll capture your wedding with the sensitivity and love it deserves.

What if it rains on our wedding day? Can film photography still capture beautiful photos?

Rain or shine, film has an incredible capacity to capture beautiful, atmospheric photos. Overcast skies often provide a soft, diffused light that’s actually quite flattering in film photography. And if it rains, we can embrace the romance of the moment, creating unforgettable, moody shots that you’ll treasure for the rest of your marriage.

Can we use your film camera to take a photo of each other during the wedding day?

Absolutely! It’s a beautiful way to add a personal touch to your wedding photos, and it makes for a unique, intimate memory of the day. I’ll give you a quick tutorial on how to use the camera to ensure you get a great shot. Just let me know ahead of time so we can plan for this special photo op in your wedding timeline.
